Barney is a Puli, a Hungarian
sheepherding breed known for the unusual coat, which is made up of "cords" (dredlocks).
This happens around the age of 12 months, when the initial soft curly coat is
joined by a 2nd, stiffer and wiry hair. These two types of coat naturally
intertwine to form the cords.
Barney at 2 1/2 years
It takes 4-5 years to grow the cords to the ground, and a Puli
shows better with a full coat, so during those early years, Barney did AKC Dog
Agility and got his Agility Excellent and Agility Excellent Jumpers titles. At
age 5, I began to show him more in the Conformation ring, and at age 6 we hired
well-known professional handlers Bill and Taffe McFadden, and campaigned him,
mostly on the west coast. He did well.
Barney in show coat
In 2008, he went Best in Show at the San Luis Obispo Kennel Club
show in Paso Robles, CA, under Judge Mike MacBeth, handled by Bill McFadden.
Best in Show
We retired Barney from Conformation at the end of 2008, but
before he moved on, he won the Herding Group one more time.
Barney's goes out on top with a Group 1
He finished 2008 as the number 2 Puli in the country, and the
number 16 herding breed dog in the country.
In 2009, Barney returned to Agility (click
here to see him in action), and also got his CD Obedience title.
Though retired from Conformation, we brought him out one more time at the Puli
Club of America's 2009 National Specialty, where he was awarded best Veteran.
In 2010 he retired from all competition and has been focused on enjoying himself
and bossing the other Pulis in the house. He still has a lot of living to do. Who knows?
Maybe he'll take up
Ham Radio.
